The name Velarium is synonymous with quality workmanship, durability and beauty.
The first historical records of shade structures designed and installed for the purpose of sheltering people from direct radiation of the sun in public places, refers to the Velarium utilized on Roman amphitheatres. According to ancient records, the amphitheater at Pompeii, included a Velarium in 80 BC.
The Coliseum, built in Rome in 75 AD, also had a massive retractable fabric canopy to protect the spectators from the hot Mediterranean sun. This also carried the name Velarium. The fabric of these structures was tensioned by a system of ropes and pulleys operated by a company of Roman sailors from the Imperial Fleet.
